New York Training and Continuing Education Requirements
New York professionals may be subject to mandated training, profession-specific continuing education, initial licensure coursework, and employer-based education requirements.

Infection Control & Barrier Precautions
Certain New York healthcare professionals must complete approved infection-control and barrier-precautions training when first licensed or registered and every four years thereafter while practicing in New York.
The requirement applies to specified nursing, dental, medical, and other healthcare professions. The provider and documentation process differs somewhat between professions regulated through NYSED and physicians and physician assistants regulated for this requirement through NYSDOH.

New York requires members of numerous licensed professions and education professions to complete approved training in identifying and reporting child abuse and maltreatment.
Although the original licensure requirement is generally described as a one-time requirement, New York has required existing mandated reporters to complete updated curricula. The current updated curriculum must be completed by November 17, 2026.

New York professionals who are licensed to treat humans and have a DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances generally must complete at least three hours of Mandatory Prescriber Education once every three years.
The requirement also applies to medical residents who prescribe controlled substances under a facility’s DEA registration. Covered prescribers must complete all required subject areas and attest to completion through the New York State Department of Health.

A mandated training requirement is established for a particular public-protection purpose, such as infection prevention, child-abuse reporting, or responsible controlled-substance prescribing.
General continuing education requirements are usually tied to renewal of a professional registration and vary considerably by profession. Some mandated training may also qualify for continuing education credit, but professionals should not assume that it does.
Before completing training, verify:
- That the requirement applies to your profession.
- That the provider is approved or otherwise acceptable.
- That the course covers the required curriculum.
- That the credit type is accepted for your intended purpose.
- Whether documentation must be retained, submitted, or reported.
