In 2015, 16.3 people per 100,000 died of drug overdoses. That was more than 2.5 times the rate in 1999.Recent reports suggest that number is only getting worse. In the face of this epidemic, researchers struggle to find a solution. From the disaster that was the DARE program to the mixed bag that is the War on Drugs, you cannot say that the crisis comes from lack of trying. But if we are to cure or at least treat addiction, we must understand it—its scope, its causes, and its identity. Is addiction a disease or not? Addiction by the Numbers In 2016, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported that 247 million people used drugs in the past year. Of that number, 29 million people were suffering from drug use disorders. And yet only one in six people with drug use disorders were in treatment.
