Where Are You Most Likely to Die Early in the United States (and Why?)
A preventable injury-related death occurs every 3 minutes in America. While many factors contribute to the premature death rate in the United States, the leading cause of premature death is unintentional injury. The CDC reports that 20 to 40 percent of premature deaths could be prevented, so we believe that it is important to raise awareness and provide resources to help build a healthier, happier country. Which states are most impacted by premature death? The team at NYRequirements.com has created an infographic to visualize premature death rates by state and the main causes of premature death in each state:

What Is Premature Death?
According to the National Cancer Institute, premature death is death that occurs before the average age of death in a demographic. The average age of death in the United States is 75, so premature death occurs before that age. One method that is used to calculate the rate of premature death in a population is by measuring years of potential life lost due to death occurring before 75. This means that death at younger ages contributes more to the overall premature death rate than deaths closer to 75. For example, a person dying at 70 would lose five years of potential life, while a child dying at age 5 would lose 70 years of potential life.
What Is the Leading Cause of Early Death in the U.S.?
According to the National Center for Health Statistics Years of Potential Life Lost Report, unintentional injury, cancer, heart disease, COVID-19, suicide, homicide, and liver disease were the leading causes of early death in the United States in 2020, in that order. Here is the breakdown of years of potential life lost in the U.S. during 2020 by cause:
- All causes: 25,893,402
- Unintentional injury: 4,890,820 (18.9%)
- Malignant neoplasms: 4,089,150 (15.8%)
- Heart disease: 3,554,322 (13.7%)
- COVID-19: 1,778,936 (6.9%)
- Suicide: 1,338,295 (5.2%)
- Homicide: 1,010,080 (3.9%)
- Liver disease: 803,505 (3.1%)
- Diabetes mellitus: 774,685 (3%)
- Neonatal death: 723,277 (2.8%)
- Chronic lower respiratory disease: 621,276 (2.4%)
- All others: 6,309,046 (24.4%)
Risk factors for premature death include smoking, obesity, and exposure to environmental hazards such as poor air quality. Risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and lack of physical activity are all also risk factors for premature death.
The most common cause of premature death in the United States is unintentional injury. Driving factors include occupational hazards and risky behaviors like not wearing seat belts or motorcycle helmets and misusing drugs and alcohol.
Populations at risk for premature death include Alaska Native/American Indian people, who have premature death rates around 50% higher than those of non-Hispanic whites. Infant mortality rates are almost twice as high among this population than white children. Other significant premature death rate factors include rural environments, alcohol-related accidents, and lack of traffic safety. The rate of premature death among the black population was consistently double that of the white population from 1960 to 2009, with cardiovascular disease, homicide, and infant mortality being the driving factors. In fact, black populations have the highest infant mortality rate in the United States. People in rural communities are also at higher risk for premature death. White adults in rural areas have a steadily rising early mortality rate, largely due to poisonings, drug overdoses, and suicides.
