Before vaccines were created, the reality of severe illness – or even death – from widespread diseases was a worldwide fear. Overtime, vaccines have successfully evolved in the healthcare industry, eradicating certain diseases altogether, such as smallpox, and nearly eliminating others, like polio. Other diseases such as measles, diphtheria and whooping cough are at an all-time low, according the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). When a child is born, they are born with protection against some diseases due to the mother passing antibodies to them in the womb and through breastfeeding.
